Get Smarty: Address Standardization and Parsing Helping Make RouteSmart Solutions Even Smarter
At RouteSmart Technologies, we are committed to providing our clients with the most intelligent route planning and optimization solutions possible.
At RouteSmart Technologies, we are committed to providing our clients with the most intelligent route planning and optimization solutions possible. That’s why we’re excited to announce our upcoming integration with Smarty, an online service that will help us standardize and parse addresses for even more precise route planning.
What is Smarty?
Smarty is a subscription-based, online service which allows us to submit addresses that we might not fully recognize and have the addresses “standardized” to meet best addressing standards. This means that addresses are formatted correctly, with street types and unit designations extracted and added where necessary. For example, “121 Main Str” will be standardized to “121 Main St” and “123A Elm Ave” will become “123 Elm Av Unit A.”
Why do we want to standardize addresses?
Getting an accurate rooftop geocode (x,y coordinates) is vital for creating intelligent route plans and making intelligent sequencing decisions. While we currently get a good rooftop geocode for more than 90 percent of addresses that clients send us, the remaining client addresses that don’t geocode at high precision can lead to less than satisfying and suboptimal route planning.
By standardizing addresses, we can ensure accurate rooftop geocoding, which is vital for creating intelligent route plans and making informed sequencing decisions. This will ultimately result in more efficient and effective routing for our clients.
“With the use of Smarty, we will now take whatever client address fails to geocode at a high rooftop precision and pass it through the Smarty service to get a more recognized standardized address representation,” said John Sniezek, Ph.D., VP of Product Management. “The standardized address is then re-geocoded, and in the majority of cases, a better precision of geocoding is obtained using the standardized address.”

But it doesn’t stop at address standardization. Smarty will also allow us to parse addresses into individual street attributes, including house number, pre-directional, street name, street type, post-directional, unit, and more. This will aid in street name matching for clients who provide their own coordinates, ensuring we can associate the client coordinates with the appropriate individual street segment for service.
What is the deployment schedule?
RouteSmart Online is having Smarty integrated as we speak. We expect to go live in production by the end of March. After successfully using Smarty in RouteSmart Online, we will then integrate it into RaaS for our API and RaaS portal users. We expect go live for both the RaaS API and the RaaS portal to be during the third quarter of 2023.
By using Smarty for address standardization and parsing, we can continue to provide the most intelligent route planning solutions possible for our clients. This new feature will help us to improve our solutions even further and provide our clients with more efficient and effective routing. At RouteSmart, we are always looking for ways to improve, and we are excited to implement Smarty and continue to push the boundaries of intelligent route planning.
