Utilizing RouteSmart Technologies, a United Kingdom business and residential district generated efficiency savings of over
£100 000 per year.
The Daventry District Council (DDC) was required to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill by 25%, while making strenuous efforts to improve the efficiency of its waste collection services against strong housing and population growth.
To increase efficiency, plan for growth, and reduce landfill, the DDC turned to RouteSmart partner Integrated Skills (IS). Using geographic information from Ordnance Survey, IS used RouteSmart to generate new collection routes, determine potential savings and to investigate the benefits of county-wide, cross-border working. The system calculates and optimizes routes, taking into account daily and weekly workloads, delays, weight restrictions and suitable time windows.
Working with IS and RouteSmart, the DDC was able to generate £125 000 savings for Daventry each year since 2006. DDC also saw efficiency improvements by reducing the number of domestic waste collection routes, including:
- Reduced mileage and carbon footprint
- A reduction in the number of routes
- 14% increase in spare capacity, which has helped serve the growth in new properties
- Informed evaluation of the impact of different collection methodologies; disposal locations and fleet requirements
