The Virginian-Pilot cut their miles in half by using RouteSmart Online to combine their home delivery and single copy routes.
The Virginian-Pilot depended on RouteSmart for more than ten years to automate route lists, and save time and money otherwise spent on manually calculating their routes. They recently decided to make the move to web-based RouteSmart Online for three important reasons: to decrease IT hardware costs by leveraging RouteSmart Online’s benefit as a hosted service, to enable carriers to pull their own carrier mail and route lists anytime from any device, and to support the complex integration of home delivery and single copy routing and operations, which spans 13 publications.
With RouteSmart Online’s advantages, The Virginian-Pilot moved to a hosted routing solution, granted carriers anywhere, anytime access to routes, and consolidated home delivery and single copy routes to dramatically decrease miles traveled. RouteSmart Online produced immediate results, allowing the circulation department to reconfigure the routes and optimize the carriers’ time in the field. With the consolidation of home delivery and single copy routes, they've grown in leaps and bounds from the desktop to the online version in terms of usage.
The transition to RouteSmart Online enabled The Virginian-Pilot to tackle three business objectives for improving distribution operations: leveraging the economies of a hosted solution, providing carriers access with direct web-based access to their routing information, and facilitating the consolidation of home delivery and single copy routes to cut miles traveled by 50% and save considerable associated costs.
